On 9th April 2026, the District Administration of West Garo Hills, in collaboration with the District School Education Office, organized a Career Guidance Program aimed at helping students explore emerging career opportunities and future-ready skills.

I had the privilege of being invited as a Resource Person to conduct a session on “Introduction to Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Fields of AI.” The session was designed to provide students with a practical understanding of Artificial Intelligence (AI), its applications, and how they can responsibly use AI-powered tools to enhance their learning and creativity.

Understanding Artificial Intelligence

The session began with a simple introduction to Artificial Intelligence.

Students were asked a fundamental question:

What is Artificial Intelligence?

To make the concept relatable, we discussed several AI-powered systems that many students already use or have heard about, including:

  • ChatGPT
  • Alexa
  • Siri

This helped students realize that AI is not a futuristic concept but something that is already integrated into their daily lives.

How Does AI Work?

One of the key objectives of the session was to simplify complex technological concepts.

Students were introduced to the basic process behind AI:

Data → Learning → Prediction

This process is commonly known as Machine Learning, where computers learn patterns from large amounts of data and use those patterns to make predictions or generate responses.

The discussion also touched upon Deep Learning, an advanced form of AI that works in a way somewhat similar to how the human brain processes information and recognizes patterns.

A Very Important Clarification About AI

A crucial part of the session focused on helping students understand the limitations of Artificial Intelligence.

Many people assume that AI thinks and understands like humans. However, students were informed that:

  • AI does not have emotions.
  • AI does not think independently.
  • AI does not truly understand information.
  • AI predicts outputs based on patterns it has learned from data.

Because of these limitations, AI can sometimes make mistakes or provide incorrect information.

This understanding is essential for responsible AI usage and helps students develop critical thinking skills when interacting with AI tools.

Where Is AI Used Today?

Students were then introduced to various real-world applications of AI.

Some examples discussed included:

Education

AI can help explain concepts, summarize lessons, and support personalized learning experiences.

Communication

AI-powered tools assist with translation, content creation, and digital communication.

Creative Industries

AI is increasingly being used in design, content generation, art creation, video production, and storytelling.

The objective was to help students recognize the vast opportunities emerging in AI-related fields.

The Power of Prompting

One of the most valuable lessons of the session was understanding the concept of Prompting.

A prompt is simply the instruction given to an AI system.

Students learned that the quality of the output depends largely on the quality of the prompt.

Example:

❌ Write about cricket.

✅ Write a 100-word paragraph about cricket for school students.

This comparison helped students understand that effective prompts should be:

  • Clear
  • Specific
  • Detailed

Learning how to ask good questions is one of the most important skills in the age of AI.

Hands-On AI Activity 1: Learning with AI

Students were introduced to a practical exercise using ChatGPT.

They were asked to type:

“Explain the solar system in simple words for a Class 5 student.”

After reading the response, students observed how AI could simplify complex topics into easy-to-understand explanations.

Key observations included:

  • Simple language
  • Clear structure
  • Easy understanding

This activity demonstrated how AI can serve as a learning companion and help students grasp difficult concepts more effectively.

Hands-On AI Activity 2: Content Creation

The second activity focused on content generation.

Students entered the prompt:

“Write a short motivational message for students preparing for exams.”

After reviewing the AI-generated response, students analyzed:

  • Structure
  • Tone
  • Clarity

This exercise highlighted an important distinction between traditional search engines and AI systems.

Unlike search engines that primarily provide links and information, AI can generate original content based on user instructions.

Hands-On AI Activity 3: Becoming a Fantasy Character

The most exciting part of the session was a creative AI exercise that captured students’ imagination.

Participants were asked to use the following prompt:

“Transform my portrait into a cinematic fantasy character. Keep my facial features recognizable but reimagine me as an elven warrior or a magic scholar. The background should be a magical, glowing forest at twilight with fireflies. Style: Detailed digital painting, intricate magical armor, soft ethereal lighting, vibrant fantasy colors, Studio Ghibli meets Final Fantasy art style.”

Students were amazed to see how AI could transform ordinary photographs into imaginative fantasy artworks.

This activity demonstrated the creative potential of AI and reinforced a key lesson:

The better the prompt, the better the result.

Key Takeaway for Students

Throughout the session, students were encouraged to view AI as a tool rather than a replacement for human intelligence.

Artificial Intelligence can help individuals:

  • Learn faster
  • Think more efficiently
  • Explore creative ideas
  • Improve productivity

However, students were reminded that AI should never replace human judgment, critical thinking, or creativity.

Looking Ahead

Artificial Intelligence is rapidly becoming a part of our everyday lives and future workplaces. Understanding how to use AI responsibly will be an essential skill for the next generation.

The session concluded with a message that resonated strongly with the students:

“Artificial Intelligence will not replace humans. But humans who know how to use AI will lead the future.”

As technology continues to evolve, initiatives like the Career Guidance Program organized by the District Administration, West Garo Hills, play an important role in preparing students for the opportunities and challenges of the digital age.
